On the way home…

We said goodbye to Sam on the 17th when Carl and Danny drove her back to Indianapolis to catch her flight.  Michele and I hung around Frankfort until Sunday the 20th.  We had dinner at the Manitou on the 17th and the Bidler’s on the 18th.  We left Beulah around 10:00 on Saturday and headed north.  We made the Macinaw bridge by 1:00, took some pictures and continued up into the U.P., stopping at the Van Rippen State Park.  We set up camp, fixed some chicken, a salad, and some veggies.  After we cleaned up we turned in for the evening.  On the morning of the 21st we broke camp and headed west on Highway 2.  We stopped at Agate Falls to take pictures and buy a cribbage board for the Seftons. After leaving the falls I was stopped by the Michigan State Police for speeding (71 in a 55).  After rolling down my window and saying “Hello Occifer” I think he felt sorry for Michele and let us off with a warning to slow it down.  We made it out of the U.P., through Wisconsin (where we got a Cheese Head for John) into Minnesota, past Duluth, and camped at Norway Beach on Cass Lake part of The Leech Lake National Forest.  The site was beautiful and Ozzy became a lake dog.  He loved chasing the stick into the lake.  We ate (pork I think) and settled down for the evening.  On the morning of the 22nd we took our time breaking camp, showered, and got on the road around 11:30.  We had lunch at a nice restaurant in a Log Cabin building.  Then hit the road and made it through North Dakato into Chinnok Montana before we decided to stop at a hotel (nothing for miles around).  After a good night sleep and a hot shower we started off on the 23rd around 9:00 and made it through Glacier National Park and into Missoula.  Glacier NP was AWESOME!  We stopped and let Ozzy swim again.  The road through the park was under construction and the going was slow.  Michele didn’t like any of the camp sites so we kept going.  As we pulled into Missoula it started to rain and hail.  We decided that another hotel was a good idea.  In the morning of the 24th we hiked the Missoula river trail, backed up, and hit the road again.  We took Highway 12 through the Nez Perce NP in Idaho (beautiful rivers and forest) into Washington.  Walla Walla sucked and we made it to Hermiston Oregon before we got another hotel late in the evening.  On the road in the morning of the 25th along the Columbia River Gorge all the way to Sam in Ashland.  We had dinner, slept, got up, paid Sam’s tuition, looked for houses to rent and eventually started for home around 5:30 in the afternoon.  We pulled into our driveway at 12:00 midnight on the 26th, 3 weeks and a day after our start.  I will post pictures soon.
